چکیده
Abstract We compare atmospheric temperature changes in satellite data and model ensembles performed under phases 5 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5 CMIP6). In lower stratosphere, multidecadal stratospheric cooling during period strong ozone depletion is smaller newer CMIP6 simulations than CMIP5 or data. troposphere, however, despite forcing climate sensitivity differences between two CMIP ensembles, their ensemble-average global warming over 1979–2019 very similar. also examine four properties tropical behavior governed by basic physical processes. The first three are ratios trends water vapor (WV) sea surface (SST), lower-tropospheric (TLT), mid- to upper-tropospheric (TMT). fourth property ratio TMT SST trends. All tightly constrained but diverge markedly observations. trend WV closest observed when latter calculated with datasets exhibiting larger ocean troposphere. For TMT/SST ratio, model–data consistency depends on combination observations used estimate If expectations these covariance relationships realistic, our findings reflect either a systematic low bias tropospheric an overestimate moistening signal. It currently difficult determine which interpretation more credible. Nevertheless, analysis reveals anomalous several observational illustrates diagnostic power simultaneously considering multiple complementary variables.

Using palaeo-climate comparisons to constrain future projections in CMIP5
We present a selection of methodologies for using the palaeo-climate model component of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (Phase 5) (CMIP5) to attempt to constrain future climate projections using the same models. The constraints arise from measures of skill in hindcasting palaeo-climate changes from the present over three periods: the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) (21 000 yr before presen...

Using climate model simulations to assess the current climate risk to maize production
The relationship between the climate and agricultural production is of considerable importance to global food security. However, there has been relatively little exploration of climate-variability related yield shocks. The short observational yield record does not adequately sample natural inter-annual variability thereby limiting the accuracy of probability assessments. Focusing on the United ...

Accurate estimates of the spatial and temporal variation in terrestrial water and energy fluxes and mean states are important for simulating regional hydrology and biogeochemistry in high-latitude regions. Furthermore, it is necessary to develop high-resolution hydroclimatological datasets at finer spatial resolutions than are currently available from global analyses. This study uses a regional...
